Maruka: The Best Udon In Tokyo (Jimbocho)


Arguably, the best udon in Tokyo for the price is in Jimbocho. Udon Maruka is outstanding for its rich taste and perfect noodles and toppings. A must-try for udon lovers!

Maruka: The King Of The Udon

Udon lovers in Tokyo know for sure this address. It is run by a chef from Takamatsu City, the undisputed capital of udon in Japan. Maruka's udon noodles are not only fantastic for the taste, they're actually cheap too! You can have a satisfying meal there for less than ¥1,000.
It takes about a 4-minute walk from the Jimbocho Station (Exit A5) to get there or a 7-minute walk from the Ochanomizu Station.

People are so fond of the restaurant that they are willing to wait in line for a long time to get in.

When To Go To Maruka?

Unfortunately, you cannot make a reservation.

The store is open from 11:00 to 19:30 on weekdays and from 11:00 to 14:30 on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday.

People report that the best time to go to avoid queuing is around 4 PM, so plan accordingly!


Kake Udon かけうどん [¥420]

Sometimes, the standard is just the best! You can have it cold or hot. With noodles perfectly cooked and an irresistibly savoury broth with a deep umami, people can't resist this one.

Wakame Udon わかめうどん [¥580]

This one is the same great udon as the standard but it has as a topping a generous amount of wakame seaweed. The wakame adds another dimension of savouriness and an interesting texture.

Moon Viewing Udon かけ月見うどん [¥460]

The name of this one is pronounced "tsukimi" in Japanese, which literally means moon viewing. The egg yolk topping represents the moon. "Tsukimi foods" (foods with eggs) are very popular in the late summer and early fall in Japan because that is traditionally the best time of year to contemplate the moon. The egg is super fresh and you might like the creaminess it adds to the dish.

Butter and Black Pepper 釜たまカルピスバター [¥580]

The deluxe butter with the coarsely ground black pepper of this udon creates a very good combination of tastes.

Meat Udon 肉うどん [¥680]

An udon for meat lovers. This one is topped with a nice amount of thinly sliced beef.

Tempura Toppings [¥190〜¥300]

You can bonify any udon dish you order with various types of toppings that cost a little extra. Tempura items are classics to have with udon. Adding a huge tempura shrimp will cost an extra ¥280.
